'Soft' | Short Film Review

'Soft' By Simon Ellis

Dad
  • Insecure
  • Passive
  • Introverted
  • Working
  • Simple
  • Everyday
  • Organised
Goal
  • To get on in life.
  • Get the milk for the tea.
  • Influence his son.
  • Be a role model.
  • Bond with his son OR Son wants to bond with his Dad.

Conflict:
  • The thugs/gang.
  • Got to protect his son, but he's a coward.
  • No milk to make the tea.
Change:
  • Father/Son relationship.
  • Son can defend himself.
  • Son has lost respect for his Dad.
  • World around them (the neighbours).

Ideas of what could have made Ellis write this short film:
  • Personal experience.
  • Witness to the event.
  • On the news.
  • Scouting - seeing a gang.
  • Regular routine.
  • Part of the gang.
Some ideas of what words could be used within the short films pitch:
  • Contemporary (present day)
  • Conflicting
  • Complex relationship
  • Issues
  • Inner conflict
  • Gang culture
  • Drama
  • Father and Son
  • Urban
  • Working Class
  • Masculinity challenged

The pitch I made up for the short film:

Contemporary Drama that witnesses a troubled father/son relationship as it crumbles because of the violent interruption of routine from the local gang.
