Vivian Maier | Self Portrait

Photography

Vivian Maier

in Bangkok, Thailand - June 15, 1959

This self portrait photo makes me wonder what type of person Maier is/was. I get a sense that she is was either depressed or felt some what out of place. I get this from the black and white filter that has been created through the use of the black and white camera. You can see the camera through the reflection shown in the image, and this makes the time period clear and visible. This helps with the location and it also effectives the inner meaning of the image.

Maier is seen in the left corner of the image through the reflection of a mirror seen on a building. The fact that she is in in the corner and not directly in the middle makes me think that she didn't like being the centre of attention, and she was always the one who was in the crowd rather than being the main attention. This adds a sense of depression and almost a sense of regret into the image. The colours of the background are quite faded and soft, whereas the colours in the foreground are harsh and dark. This poses a sad and depressive emotion on the image and the inner emotion of Maier.

I have decided that I want to make my self portrait video desaturated in colour to show that my range of emotions and to make it clear that I'm not always happy and people can relate to that. I feel as if most people can relate to Maier's image as many people feel out of place and some feel depressed. I want to make sure that my self portrait video clearly shows my emotions but people can relate to it in some ways.
