Logo | Development

Ida talked to the graphic designer and she got a few designs back from her.

We really liked the designs that she had created, but we all agreed that they didn't really suit our brand. When talking about the logo design, Ida had suggested a minimalistic look, but after seeing the designs we wanted something a little different.

After a lot of deliberation, Nisserin took the temporary image and adapted it to make it our own.

We got together as a group and reviewed Nisserin's design and we all agreed that it fitted our brand perfectly. We discussed a few changes that could be made to make it look more Yak like and also to give it a little more character. This is the final outcome:

We all really liked the new design and it's perfect for our brand.
We will be using this logo for our social media accounts, as a way for people to recognise our brand.

Pictures for Website & Test Shoot | Development

To interact with our audience a little bit more, we decided to have an 'About Us' page, and within this page we will have pictures of the crew along with a description for each person. We will also have our 25 word pitch on the page, so people know what we're about.

We had discussed that we wanted normal pictures but also a few silly ones as well. I brought in a few props that we could use along with my camera. We booked out the LED lights so the pictures would come out well but also so we could get used to working with them before the actual shoot days.

Once the photos were taken, I edited them and here are a few of the outcomes:

At the same time, while we had the camera and the lights, we decided to do a test shoot. Josh ran through the script and we timed it so we knew roughly how long the outcome will come to.

Doing this helped us work out what sort of shots we wanted our green screen bit to have and also, it gave us an idea of how the script would sound and how well it flowed.

Our Viral Videos | Development

As part of our idea, we had decided to create two videos in order to try and go viral. This goes along with our topic of viral videos and also it adds a bit of interaction with the audience.

After the meeting where we discussed this, we all went away and did some research on viral videos and what they usually consist of. When we got together next we decided we would make a cat video and a video where we throw things at one of our members - Josh.
We also agreed that we should upload them to Facebook instead of YouTube, as we know videos are more likely to circulate to a wider audience through Facebook.

We're going to keep an eye on the number of views the videos gain, and on the day of the green screen shoot we will update the script with the right amount of views.

Here is the video of things being thrown at Josh:

Lad Bible | Research

Lad Bible is an online brand, that focuses on providing news and entertainment to a global audience. The brand is followed by 18-24 year old men and woman and it is the 12th most visited website in the UK.

"The right content, told in the right way, brings together a vast audience and helps change the world for the better."

The company was founded in 2012 by creators Solly Solomou and Arian Kalantari, and it has become one of the best media brands for an audience of youths. It started as a Facebook page and grew to a multichannel, multi-brand portfolio which reaches around 150 million people, and more, per week.
Not only do they have a website, they also have their own social media accounts and more:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Snapchat
  • Twitter
  • Vine
  • YouTube
  • Apple TV
  • iOS app

For students, this brand is ideal as they can look at serious news while also browsing for the recent memes and viral videos. Also, the fact that they have several social media accounts, means that they can reach a variety of different ages and people.
This is something we want to achieve with our brand, and to do this we will make sure all of our content is eye-catching and recent in the world of news.

Script | Development

As a group, we all discussed and agreed on a structure for our video, which helped me a lot when writing the script. As co-scriptwriter, once we had done the structure, I got on with the job of writing a basic script for our presenter to follow.
In a previous meeting, we had decided that I would write a basic outline of the script and we would all get together and add the humour into it, so we all had some contribution to it.

To make it easier for me, I started off by splitting the different sections up into headings. I did this so I could focus on one section at a time, and also if I thought of anything for those sections I could just write notes underneath.

After writing a few sections of the script, I sent it to Nisserin (co-scriptwriter) to see what she thought of it. She then put it into an actual script form so we knew how the final outcome would look, as well changing and adding a few extra bits.

Once I had made a few additions to the script, myself and Nisserin got together to carry on writing the rest of it. The pre-titles and the intro were pretty much done, so we focused manly on the interview package, the live package and the outro. I felt that working with Nisserin when we were actually together was a lot easier than when we were apart. This is because we could both say our own opinion on what the other suggests and also we could both check that we hadn't forgotten to add anything.

We both really liked the idea that we should add a few references to past viral videos - due to our story. So we added a few audio references in the intro in order to keep the topic clear and also to add some humour.

We then decided it was time to show the other two what we had written, and get some feedback as well as some humorous comments that we could add in.
Both Josh and Ida really liked what we had come up with and liked the use of references. We needed to adapt the script to fit the way Josh would naturally speak, so we got him to read through the script. We then stopped and started while changing sentences and words, just so it was accurate and also so it flowed a little better.
We then went through and brainstormed over some over references we could make within the script. There were also a few actions we wanted to use - inspired by Topical Waffle - so we made sure to add those in.
When I first wrote the 'step by step guide' I wasn't exactly sure how the image would look, but after talking with Nisserin and the other two, we all came up with what we wanted it to look like and what exactly we wanted to say.

As a group, we discussed the actions to go along with the script, as well as the live package. After changing our live idea, we were a lot more confident with how it was going to look and what we wanted our presenter to say.
We all really liked the wording of the script, as well as a few changes we made to viral video references and humorous comments.

Here is the outcome of our script:

~~~~
The way we got the script written and done was very effective:
  • We started off with a rough idea of what we wanted, and the writers turned that into a script.
  • The two writers then got together and made sure everything the way we wanted it to be, while also checking we had everything.
  • We then got together with the rest of the group to get their feedback and also so they could add some ideas and contributions to the actual script.
All four of us had some contribution to the script, whether it be small or big, and we were all opinionated on certain sentences, phrases and jokes. Having all of us really like the script will benefit us when filming, as Josh (the presenter) will enjoy reciting the words, and the rest of us will enjoy hearing it.
Live Package Changes | Development
When talking to Helen about our live package idea, she gave us some feedback on it. She wasn't sure how interesting it would be if it was just people answering questions on our viral video (our original plan), which we all understood and agreed.
She then suggested that we do some sort of obstacle course or game, and it should be related to our  topic.
We brainstormed as a group:
  • Bottle flip challenge (multiple different bottles to be flipped)
  • Obstacle course inspired by different viral videos
We were aware that our live package had to be 2 minutes long - meaning that we would only have 1 minute for the game, which then led us to believe that an obstacle course probably wasn't the best idea.
We then discussed the bottle flip challenge, but instead of having the contestants flip more than one bottle, we agreed that they should have one bottle each and try and see how many flips they could do.
[The bottle flip challenge is a very current trend going around the world - people flip bottles and try and get it to land standing up.]
After agreeing on our idea, some research was done, and we found out that someone holds the world record of the number of flips in a minute. We then added that to our idea to make it a little bit more interesting and competitive.
Here is what our live package will now include:
  • Intro (30 seconds long)
  • Bottle flip challenge (1 minute long)
    • Two students as the contestants
    • Other students as background entertainers
  • Outro (30 seconds long)
Locations | Research
Due to our brand being based at students and being based at a studio, we decided it would be best if we filmed everything at our own university building - Maidstone TV Studios.
Green Screen
We had originally discussed using one of the rooms located on the ground floor of the studios and also possibly the studio itself. But due to unavailability and prices, we were not able to book these rooms.
However, we have decided that we will use Lecture Room 2 instead. We know that there might be some disturbance coming from outside the room from other students, but we will be sure to tell them to keep the noise down if it comes to that.
Interview
For the interview, we originally wanted to shoot in in the base room. We deliberated over this, but decided it would probably be really impractical as people are always sat in there working and talking. Instead we again decided to use Lecture Room 2.
Because we want to create a really comfortable setting, we will move the sofas and a few tables into the room, while adding a few extra props to add to the scenery.
Live
For the live, we originally wanted it to be at the University for the Creative Arts Rochester Campus. Our original idea consisted of us asking the students about the iPhone update - however it was agreed that, that news would soon be uninteresting and we needed a new idea.
We then had the idea of people watching our viral videos, which meant we could move the location to Maidstone TV Studios.
We are going to use either Lecture Room 2 again, or another big room in the building.
