Planning the Script | Development

To start the writing process of the pilot script, myself and Laura sat down and went through our first initial script ideas. We changed a few aspects, including the new names, and some of the story to match with our 'Young & Famous' plot.

Original Script Plan

The overall plot for the pilot episode is:
Annie gets a new iPad, and Dean is waiting for a letter to be an applicant on a cooking show. Betty comes over and a drama occurs with Clare, their next door neighbours, and Dean's applicant doesn't go as planned.

And here is a rough script scene breakdown:
  1. Dean is waiting for a letter, while Annie is doing yoga in the living room. There are mentions fit bits, smart watches, and there is an introduction to the characters relationship.
  2. The doorbell goes off, and Dean answers thinking it's for him, when in fact it's a delivery for Annie. Annie leaves as the doorbell goes off again, where once again Dean thinks it's for him, when in fact it's the same delivery man getting him to sign for the package.
  3. Dean goes into the kitchen, where Annie is opening her package - an iPad. Annie forces Dean to take a selfie with her for social media, when Betty appears in the selfie unexpectedly. Betty wishes Dean luck on his letter and surprises him with a gift - a wooden spoon with her face on it. She also get's Dean to look after her robotic cat Arnold before she leaves. Dean puts both the cat and the spoon in the 'Betty Box' once she is gone and hears the doorbell go off. He opens it to reveal Betty still on the driveway looking at him creepily.
  4. Annie is sat in the dining room texting her grandchild Violet about Instagram. Dean walks in taping drawers with masking tapes, Annie questions him and talks about their other grandson Lewis. Annie posts her first picture on Instagram and shows Dean, they then go on to talk about the old days when they were younger. The old clock starts to chime off beat, and Annie and Dean do the usual tasks to turn it off. Dean eventually uses Betty's spoon to bash it and stop it from chiming.
  5. They are interrupted by a crash from the garden, which happens to be Claire crawling towards them after throwing herself over the fence. Claire begins to sob to Annie about her maid of honour and her having an argument over a silly aspect of the wedding. Dean is in the kitchen baking cookies for later. The doorbell goes off and Claire leaves before having to taste one of Dean's vile biscuits.
  6. Dean answers the door and reveals a Greg Wallace look a like and he gives Dean a letter of acceptance onto Masterchef. Dean shouts for Annie, and she turns up with her iPad in hand, recording the in-counter. Greg takes a bite out of the cookies in Dean's hand, and throws them back up again. He takes the letter back from Dean ending with the question "Where's the buttery biscuit base?
  7. THE END

This plan is still subject to change, and we need to work out the grandchildren's part a bit more, as we aren't sure whether that will stay in there. At this point, this is what our script breakdown sounds like, we just need to start writing into script format. We have decided that I will write the first three scenes and Laura will write the last 3, to make it equal.
