Laura started by creating an audition form that basically asked them information she needed such as:
- Where they are located.
- What their travel to the desired location will be.
- And more.
After this was done, we moved onto writing out a kind of guideline of how each audition will work, so we were all on the same page.
We decided to start by introducing ourselves - this can be done by Laura when she goes to collect the actor, and then once they have entered the room.
We will ask them about themselves, with question starters such as:
- Where they've come from
- Who they are
- How they are
We think this is key in getting a sense of their personality, and whether they will be fun and good to work with, which is important in our project.
I will then give an explanation as to what I want them to do. So, I will start by telling them we will do a script read through for a specific scene, and then we will do some improv scenarios.
For the script read throughs, I went through all of the scenes in the third draft of the script and chose one scene for each specific character.
- Dean Davis - Scene 8
- Annie Davis - Scene 10
- Betty-Jo King - Scene 8
- Marie Dubois - Scene 1 & potentially 16
- Delivery Man - Scene 7
- Jordan Hamsay - Scene 16
I'm thinking of getting them to do this scene(s) once over, and then potentially getting them to do it again and directing them if they need to do something else, or need to add a little more to their performance.
Then for the improv scenarios, we thought about different scenarios in which we think the characters would react in specific ways. Here is what we have come up with:
- Dean Davis
- Standing in a queue at a supermarket.
- He burnt his food.
- His grandchildren told him they don't want to see him.
- Been given a present that he's really wanted.
- What would make Dean really happy?
- Annie Davis:
- Didn't quite understand new piece of tech.
- Violet told her she's dressing too young.
- Her family cancels Christmas.
- Someone completes her outfit/hair.
- What would make Annie really happy?
- Betty-Jo King
- Saw Dean talking to another old lady/helping another old lady with her troubles.
- Arnold went missing.
- Annie caught her out on spying on Dean.
- Dean was fixing her plumbing.
- What would make Betty really happy?
- Marie Dubois
- Annie & Dean were at her child's birthday party, and they cut and ate the cake before it was time to blow the candles out.
- Violet/Alexander got an achievement at school.
- Get's a big promotion at work.
- Husband is called away at work again.
- What would make Marie really happy?
- Delivery Man
- Lost his parcel.
- Went to the wrong house.
- Has a suspicious parcel in his bag and wants to open it.
- Delivers a parcel to his crushes house.
- What are the possible ways in which he would damage a parcel?
- What would make the Delivery Man really happy?
- Jordan Hamsay
- Someone gave him dodgy biscuits.
- Children's cooking.
- His new show 'The Last Dish' has an decline in ratings because of Dean Davis' cooked cookies fiasco.
- Making the headline for all the wrong reasons.
- What would make Jordan Hamsay really happy?
We decided to ask the same question for each character - what would make....really happy? - in order to grasp how well the actor knows the character, and what they would bring to the table when playing that character.
By doing these improv scenarios, it gives us a good sense as to whether the actors are good at improv and if they can add anything extra to the character. We are open to the actors adding extra lines of dialogue if it makes the scene funny, so this is a key aspect in finding our cast.
I am looking for actors that are really nice, good to work with, and can portray a very natural and realistic act for the characters. The main thing I am looking for is they are natural within the characters, and obviously if they are humorous in the way they play their chosen character.
We are prepared for the audition, and we are confident that we will find some good actors for the roles.
