After all of our prep, it was time for us to go ahead with the auditions and finally meet actors who have been applying for the roles in our project.
The schedule, created by Laura, for the 13th looked like this:
Unfortunately, we didn't get all acts turn up, and none of the actors who applied for the delivery man turned up. However, all of the acts that did turn up were friendly and we were able to judge their performance of the characters clearly.
One of our favourite acts from this day of auditions was Elizabeth Cachia, playing the role of Marie Dubois. As soon as we met Liz, we could see she was very down to earth and a joy to be around. This immediately made us think of what it would be like to work with her, and we all agreed she would be really fun to work with. Her attitude is always positive, and when I gave her a little more direction, not that she really needed it, she listened and this deems positive for the shoot days.
Her portrayal of Marie Dubois was accurate to what myself and Laura envisioned upon writing the character into the screen. Upon testing her with the improv scenarios, she showed us that she knows the character really well, and she actually added a few more traits and aspects of Marie that we thought worked really well.
Her acting seemed really natural and realistic, and it was almost like she was Marie Dubois when acting. I was really happy with her acting ability, and the way she presented the character, and I think it will work really with with the pilot episode we are producing.
Overall, she we all thought she was a perfect fit for the Marie Dubois character, and we think she'll be really fun and great to work with.
Another one of our favourite acts from this day of auditions was Susan Baskerville, playing the role of Betty-Jo King. She was actually booked to audition for both Betty and Annie Davis, but we all agreed she worked better as Betty. Upon meeting Susan, we all agreed she had a really good look for Betty, she was small but still lively and energetic. When doing a read through of the script, she sounded and looked like Betty in her speech and actions, and she was naturally humorous as this character.
Upon testing her with the improv scenarios, she showed us that she knew the character really well, and she added more to the character than we had written, which we loved. We were all really happy with Susan's portrayal of Betty, and we thought she would be really good to work with. Susan had previously worked on a project for one of our class members, a couple of years ago, so we know from word of mouth that she is really good to work with. She was nice, friendly, and a lot of fun, she we think she would be perfect for the character Betty.
Her acting seemed really natural, and realistic, but I might need to direct her to bring a bit more energy to the role. Even though she did portray energy, I still think Betty needs a bit more to her, so this is something I can work on with her if we decide to cast her as Betty.
A third favourite act from this day of auditions was Greg Page, playing the role of Dean Davis. Upon meeting Greg, he seemed really friendly and easy to talk to. He mentioned to us that he knows how student projects work due to relations he has, and he's more than happy to help us with our project and make it as good as possible. Straight away, from this, we thought he would be really good to work with and would be happy with decisions we make in terms of filming days & locations, and other aspects of the production.
Upon testing his improv scenarios, he portrayed to us how well he knew the character. He had a lot of energy and great facial expressions when portraying how the character would react in certain situations. He was easy to direct and he took on board everything we had mentioned to him, which is really good and something we liked about him.
His acting seemed natural and realistic, however, he might be slightly too energetic for Dean. We see Dean as a grumpy sarcastic character, so Greg might be too energetic, but I feel confident with directing him in this way, and this is something we can work on if we cast Greg as Dean.
Overall, on the 13th, we had quite a few good performances from actors, but we also got a freew that didn't really work for us. We think we have a few characters ready to be cast, but we decided to eatit until the 14th to make the overall final decision.
The schedule, created by Laura, for the 14th looked like this:
Unfortunately, much like the 13th, we didn't get all acts turn up, and none of the actors who applied for the delivery man turned up. However, all of the acts that did turn up were friendly and we were able to judge their performance of the characters clearly.
One of our favourite acts from this day of auditions was Bob Silver-Smith, playing the role of Dean Davis. However, we weren't convinced with Bob's portrayal of Dean as we didn't think he matched the character well, but he was lovely to work with. When telling us his experience, we heard he had experience with more extra parts and not a lot of speaking lines, which showed in his performance due to nerves, which we were fine with. But we all agreed that he might be better as the Delivery Guy. Since we hadn't actually audition anyone for this role, due to no one turning up for this role, we knew we needed to find someone for this role, and we thought Bob would be good in this role. He's a lovely guy to work with, listens to direction and seems happy to do what we ask of him.
Additionally, in real life he owns a van, so we might try and see if he can bring his van with him for background detail whenever the delivery man is at the door. If this is our final decision for casting, I will need to adjust the character profile for the delivery man, as he was originally at a younger age, but we feel confident with our change.
Another one of our favourite acts from this day of auditions was Christine Firkin, playing the role of Annie Davis. As soon as we met Christine, we heard her Australian accent, which obviously could be a problem in terms of accent, as Annie is Australian. However, upon seeing her portrayal of the character Annie, and hearing how well she knew the character, we really liked her as Annie. Her accent might be too posh of an English accent for the character, but this might be something I can work on with her. She also mentioned, if she was cast as Annie, she would be able to get more accent lessons to improve her British accent, which we were all pleased with, even though we thought her accent was actually really good.
During the improv scenarios, she showed that she had a good sense of the character and we all thought she looked good for the role. Her acting was natural and realistic, and I feel confident that I can direct her if I need more energy for Annie or less. We are all really happy with her performance, and think she will be great to work with.
After both days of auditions, we think we have found the majority of our cast, but the character we still need to cast is Jordan Hamsay, as we didn't find any actors that really suited that character. Laura will contact other actors that applied but couldn't make the audition, and see if they can send us an audition tape, if they still want the part. Hopefully, that will help us in finding a Jordan Hamsay, if not we will have to put out another advert for him.
I am really happy with the outcome of these auditions, and I think it was important that we saw the actors face to face and tested their improv skill.
Here are the notes I wrote for each character during the auditions:
