My Family | Research

One of the TV inspirations for our own idea is 'My Family', and this influences us in terms of character performance and some parts of content.

'My Family' is a Sitcom that started broadcasting between the years of 2000 - 2011, on BBC One.

"Ben Harper is a dentist with a cynical outlook on life. He is married to Susan, a control freak who can't cook. They have three children: dose Nick, shallow Janey and clever Michael."
"During the ten series of this sitcom other characters have come and gone. They include Ben and Susan's niece Abi; Ben's dental assistant Brigitte; over-enthusiastic Roger Bailey, a dentist who managed innocently infuriate Ben whenever they met; and Nick's scruffy Welsh friend Alfie Butts."

The content in this show is full of comedic moments triggered through problems and situations the characters are faced with, and the characters themselves. Our character Dean is quite heavily based on the character Ben, due to their dry and witty sense of humour and grumpy reaction to most aspects of life. Similarly, the relationship Ben and Susan have is very similar to that of Annie & Dean, but we have made them a bit more tolerable of each other. This is because we don't want the majority of our comedy to be based around the relationship of the couple, which is quite clearly used in 'My Family'.
Susan's characteristics are quite different to Annie's, however there are a few aspects that are similar, for example; caring about what people think about them. This is clear from a scene in the episode names 'Susan for a Bruising' in series 11, where Susan is seen doing aerobics in her living room, all because she wants to look her best for a reunion coming up.

This is similar to our scene after the teaser, but instead of Dean making fun of her for it, he just doesn't acknowledge what she is doing. We could potentially have a slight part of Dean that is confused as to why Annie is doing yoga, to add to the comedy element.

A lot of the comedy from this show comes from the characters and their interaction with each other. This is really important in our show, as there isn't any specific jokes or funny phrases that highlight the comedy in our show. The comedy aspect is all based around the characters traits and how they interact with one another. I really like this type of comedy, as it creates a more realistic tone to the show and it becomes more relatable for the audience. In comparison however, our show won't rely on a live audience reaction like this one does, so we will have to emphasise the characters interaction to make the comedy work effectively.

Overall, this show isn't one of our main influences when it comes to filming techniques or content, but it has influenced us in scene types and character interaction, which is really important for our show.
